Visitation and Family Presence

At North Shore University Hospital, we foster a care environment that is supportive of your relationship with family, significant others and friends. In response to recent events, Northwell Health—in alignment with the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH)—has taken precautions to maintain the health and safety of patients and staff. Please always check the hospital’s website, nsuh.northwell.edu/your-visit/hospitalinformation, for the most up-to-date visitation guidelines. Please ensure visitors keep the following in mind:

  • Patients can choose who can and cannot visit them while they are in our health care facility without regard to legal relationship, race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.
  • Additional limits on visitation are sometimes needed depending on a patient’s medical condition. Other reasons for modifying visitation may include:
  • if the patient requests restrictions or limitation
  • if there are safety concerns such as risk of infection
  • if visiting interferes with the care of other patients; this includes the need for rest or privacy
  • an existing court order that restricts contact
  • visitors that are disruptive, threatening or violent
  • patients in a substance abuse/mental health treatment program that has limited visiting

Visitor Check-In

Upon entering the hospital, all visitors and patients must check in at the main lobby. Guest services and/or security team members will scan the guest’s photo ID or take a picture and print a personalized badge. Badges are used to scan through barriers at the entrances and must be worn at all times and returned at the end of the visit. Guests must check in and receive a new badge every time they enter.

Guests are welcome to complete a pre-check-in questionnaire prior to entering the hospital. Confidential pre-check-in can be completed within four hours of visiting at Northwell.edu/visitregistration.
